Energy 'threat'

Contrary to suggestions in your report, "Greenhouse gas threat from wind farms on peatland goes unchecked", (12 June) the Scottish Government produced a report which calculates the impact developing wind farms has on the carbon stocks held within peat land habitat.

The document informs developers on how to use a carbon offsetting tool which calculates the payback time for wind farms sited on peat lands.

Scottish Renewables is in discussions with a network of stakeholders including academics, environmental bodies and the government to review and update this tool, which was originally produced in 2008. By following good practice the carbon payment time can be minimised.

With Scottish National Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Forestry Commission, Scottish Renewables is developing guidance for building onshore wind farms. A moratorium on wind farm development on peat land, as suggested in the article, would in fact undermine Scotland's commitment to tackling climate change and jeopardise the security of Scotland's energy future.
