Eagles at risk

Tony Andrews, (Letters, 30 August) claims it is highly unlikely that the criminal involved in the recent golden eagle poisoning was a gamekeeper.

He goes on to say that golden eagles are not at risk from gamekeepers. Sadly, the reality is quite the reverse. A large body of peer-reviewed science has proven that golden eagles breeding on grouse moors fair far worse than those on ground not maintained for shooting.

Finally he suggests the key to protecting our wildlife is for all parties to work in partnership. There have been innumerable attempts to form partnerships with gamekeepers. The good news is the very partnerships that Tony Andrews is advocating already exist in Perthshire and Aberdeenshire.
