Dying to save cash

You make reference to the fact that Scotland’s residents generally don’t live as long as England’s (your report, 23 April).

This is taken to mean that pensions paid out in Scotland will be more easily managed.

Is there an implicit assumption, then, that we all ought to continue to carry on staying relatively unhealthy and thus pass away early, so reducing the burden of our old folks’ pensions on the younger generations?

Perhaps also by not improving Scotland’s poor health record, immigrants will not be needed in such large numbers after all to top up the pension pots.
