Depressing truth

CONTRARY to stereotypical images of sufferers holding their heads in their hands, many people suffering from depression lead active and worthwhile lives, contributing to the economy and paying tax (“More anti-depressant pills prescribed for Scots”, 13 July).

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw talks about imaginative initiatives instead of pill-popping but fails to exercise sufficient imagination to come up with practical alternatives.

Cognitive therapy is useful but it is not a panacea for depression and it isn’t free either. Perhaps Mr Carlaw should spend some time in the company of depression sufferers, he may even discover an imagination behind his political blinkers.
