Democracy

Phil D'Arcy (Letters, 27 April) is correct to say that 30 per cent in Scotland voted for the SNP; to presume that 65 per cent voted to remain in the Union is speculation.

Mr D'Arcy complains that "Alex Salmond appears to feel that he now has the right to dictate to the majority of Scots". Salmond was elected First Minister of Scotland by 30 per cent of the vote; Gordon Brown has never been elected to rule and Labour was elected by far less than 30 per cent of British voters. Mr Salmond, as all should, simply expects democracy from the public broadcaster we pay for.
