Death of ‘whom’
I am afraid what leapt out at me on reading Andrew Whitaker’s no doubt insightful piece on Labour’s future (Perspective, 17 June) was the phrase “many of who”. What has become of poor old “whom”? Has he been declared an un-person?
Has he gone to join “shall” in the great grammatical graveyard?
Must we now read For Who The Bell Tolls? Does it toll for “whom”? Will it be “those who God has joined together” that no man may put asunder? Are we witnessing the triumph of The Who? This is all so distressing I feel I shall/will have to go and lie down.
