Cut wind subsidy

The head of Scotland’s green energy industry body, Niall Stewart, has written to the Prime Minister to warn that slashing subsidies for onshore wind farms by more than 10 per cent could cause “substantial” damage to the sector (your report, 14 June)

Given the substantial and irreparable damage the onshore wind farm sector is inflicting on Scotland’s greatest assets, her land and seascape, I can only hope for its sake and the sake of all consumers right across the whole of the UK and not just in Scotland who are picking up the tab for this madness, that Niall Stewart’s begging bowl pleading is completely ignored by the Prime Minister and George Osborne at the Treasury.

In fact, if both Cameron and Osborne could see their way to cutting renewable obligation certificates to onshore wind entirely, not least in light of it being a mature industry that should no longer need such generous support, such a move would send a very clear signal to investors that onshore wind has been an unmitigated disaster and that this sector of the renewables industry should no longer be given any succour whatsoever.
