Is that culture?
We keep hearing that the City Gardens Project plans, which included the destruction of Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen, was important to the city’s bid to become the City of Culture.
The definitions of the word “culture” include: 1) the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits etc; 2) that which is excellent in the arts, manners etc; 3) a particular form or stage of civilisation as that of a certain nation or period; 4) the behaviour and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic or age group. The plans for Union Terrace Gardens, in my opinion, did not fit into any of these categories.
