Cost of 20 limit

The proposal to introduce a 20 mph speed limit across Edinburgh will cause a huge increase in exhaust emissions.

This is because vehicles will all have to operate in a lower gear to travel at 20 mph, increasing emissions by 30 per cent.

In addition, journey times will increase by a third, which means engines will run for this additional time further adding to emissions. The total increase will therefore be in the region of 60 per cent.

The consequences for the environment, the health of the whole population and the additional financial burden through the increased use of fuel and increased journey times does not seem to have occurred to Edinburgh Council.
