Clarkson in clear

Those who complained that the BBC was endangering the lives of the Top Gear presenters (“Top Gear viewers concerned for Clarkson’s safety over Chernobyl visit”, 27 February) have been misled by green propaganda.

The accident was bad but not as bad as some make out. It killed only about 50 people, not all of them immediately, and has left an area hardly more radioactive than it was before the accident.

People still live and work in the “contaminated” areas, with 1,904 villages where radiation doses from the caesium are lower than background levels anywhere in the world.

The Top Gear team were never in any danger.
