Carry on voting

douglas S Bruce’s letter (10 June) nearly got it right with reference to Billy Connolly’s quote.

He was a guest on Michael Parkinson’s Sunday morning Radio 2 programme (in the 1980s, I think) in which he stated that when MPs go on their long summer vacation everyone/
everything just carried on as normal.

During that time Mr Connolly suggested that they should change the locks and both he and Parky had a good laugh about it.

As an addendum to that, I remember as an 18-year-old getting ready to vote for the first time and being rather excited. I also remember my father telling me: “Don’t get too excited son, these people are only in it to line their own pockets.” The year was 1967.
