Border-line case

Allan Massie (Perspective, 13 June) states that citizens of the European Union member states may travel, live and work anywhere in the EU.

This is true of the 22 Schengen EU countries, but passports or approved identity cards are required to enter Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the UK. Since the UK does not issue identify cards, passports are necessary in these cases for UK citizens.

It is not yet clear whether or not an independent Scotland would be in the Schengen area and there might need to be passport controls at Scottish borders.
