Battle of Loos

In Shan Ross’s otherwise excellent article on the Battle of Loos (23 September) comes the only too familiar error of equating casualties with fatalities.

The article states that 60,000 British soldiers died in the Battle. Not so. There were in the region of 20,000 battle deaths with a further 40,000 wounded and that was a bad enough figure in that dreadful battle which cost Scotland dearly, especially my local regiment, the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
