Arresting topic

MALCOLM Ewen (Letters 27 September) makes an interesting point regarding the Public Order Act 1986 allowing for police officer discretion in the case of Tory chief whip Andrew Mitchell: arrest or don’t arrest.

However, the police chose a third option: don’t arrest, but scuttle off to the press, a solution as unsatisfactory as the “not proven” verdict.
