Talk of the Town: Not such a smash hit for SuBo

SUSAN Boyle’s meteoric rise has stalled somewhat this week with news that she failed her latest screen test.

But the Blackburn songstress won’t be too downhearted as it’s not Hollywood that has knocked her back but windscreen repairer Autoglass.

The company was called out last year by a driver who needed assistance after reporting he had cracked his windscreen using a Susan Boyle CD to scrape away ice.

More cynical minds might suggest the man had in fact smashed his windscreen to escape the sound of SuBo’s dulcet tones.

A workshop that’s worth getting fired up about

YOU could be a firestarter, a fully trained and certified firestarter.

Capital flame fans are being offered the chance to sign up for a one-day pyrotechnics course designed to give practical advice and instruction on all the key aspects of stage pyrotechnics design, operation and safety.

The event takes place in the Lyceum Theatre on April 30 and organisers have stated that it “is set to go off like a rocket”.

Not literally we hope.

Chapter chatter

KEEN followers of the Edinburgh Bookshop’s Twitter feed will be well aware of some of the eccentric customers who find their way through the doorway in Bruntsfield Place.

Now the technophobes among us can catch up, as the shop is hosting the launch of a new book called Weird Things People Say in Bookshops, by Jen Campbell.

We’re assured it contains “tales of craziness from the Edinburgh Bookshop” among others.

Wonder how many of the purchasers will be anxiously flicking through the pages to check that their own daft comments haven’t made it in?

Little bobby dazzlers

TALK of the Town stands accused of slipping from its unblemished record.

It seems our spies on this fine city’s cobbled streets took their eyes off the ball.

We highlighted pupils at Balerno High School for their fine achievements at the Lothian Young Enterprise Awards.

Four of them scooped prizes and while we heaped praise on one team, Broken Records, rivals Pearllery were left feeling overlooked despite an equally deserving effort.

So we tip our hats to Dominic Simmons and Jamie MacDonald, whose jewellery and pearls also turned judges’ heads.
