Talk of the Town: City diners lap up saucy servings

BUSINESSES in the Capital were at their most romantic yesterday as they helped couples celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Few, however, are likely to have done it with quite the same style as Mexican restaurant Illegal Jacks.

For the most romantic day of the year the Lothian Road restaurant decided to re-style its menu and to get diners in the mood for love it re-named all special dishes after local strip clubs and saunas.

The bizarre menu thus featured the likes of “The Gentle Touch” fajitas, “Ambassador Sauna nachos”, a “Burke and Hare Burrito” and the enticing “Fantasy Palace Buffalo Wings”.

Owners said the limited edition Valentine’s Menu was “inspired by Edinburgh’s adult entertainment places” - so it was probably appropriate it was printed in pink.

James getting down and dirty in the Capital

HE may be used to rubbing shoulders with Hollywood superstars like Angelina Jolie and Forest Whitaker.

But yesterday superstar Scots actor James McAvoy was happy to share a few jokes with fans in Edinburgh in between filming scenes for his new blockbuster film.

The Last King Of Scotland actor was shooting scenes for Filth, the film adaptation of the novel by Irvine Welsh. And while his character – sleazy cop Bruce Robertson – may be a million miles away from royalty, McAvoy still got to enjoy the high life – the cast and crew had been filming scenes at Edinburgh Castle earlier in the day.

Driving a hard bargain

IF the tram fiasco demonstrates anything, it’s that we Capital-dwellers are prone to standing our ground in a dispute.

It seems this stubbornness may even be replicated in the High Street, with citizens from Edinburgh ranked top for haggling.

More than half of Britons said they were more likely to negotiate on price than five years ago but in the Capital we are 60 per cent more likely, according to research by Santander Credit Cards.

And we are the least embarrassed – only one in four in Edinburgh find haggling embarrassing.

Library pooch takes a bow

A dog is set to take up residence at Craigmillar Library, but thankfully, the pooch won’t be disturbing readers too much – he’s stuffed.

The Niddrie Marischal Gardens library is holding a contest to find a name for their new bookish bow wow, which will be announced on Friday.
