Stephen Halliday: Time and place for Stewart Regan to be tweeting

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan is an enthusiastic member of the Twitterati, using the unfathomably popular 140-character social medium as his favoured method of getting his message across.

His growing number of followers was certainly well served last Wednesday when the details of Scotland’s 2014 World Cup Group A qualifying fixtures first reached the public domain by way of Regan’s Twitter feed, minutes after the conclusion of the negotiations in Brussels.

Given Regan’s apparently relentless reforming zeal since taking up the most powerful administrative role in Scottish football, it comes as no surprise that he chooses to engage with the public in such a way.

Yet, for the more traditionally minded among us, it is difficult to avoid feeling just a little uneasy about the SFA’s leading man indulging himself in an often trivial manner with the online community.

Here, for example, are a few of Regan’s tweets which are less than in keeping with someone in his position.

“Anyone remember Michelle Shocked? Just listened to Anchorage, Alaska for first time in years. Great song, must dig out album at home.” – 9 November.

“Good morning. 5o’clock start and thick frost. Numb fingers to start the day. First car scrape of the season! #wotnodeicer.” – 7 November.

“Looking forward to Rolf Harris on @piersmorgan Life Stories. Two Little Boys was first song I learnt all words to – age 5 #guiltysecret.” – 5 November

“Is it me or is this first year people have started decorating their houses for Halloween? They’ll come down in time for Xmas decs #ebeneezer.” – 31 October.

“Happy hour in Paris. 6 Euros a drink! What’s happy about that? Wait until 9pm then it’s back to ‘pretty hacked off’ hour! 9 Euros! #ripoff .” – 24 October

There are more than enough inane contributions on Twitter from footballers with too much spare time on their hands, or attention-seeking football writers incapable of keeping even the most trifling thoughts to themselves.

If you must use Twitter Stewart, please stick to information with relevance to Scottish football and your part in it.
