Such was the wealth of wisdom given out by one of Scotland’s greatest ever footballing minds that the above quote, by comparison, seems rather pedestrian. However, with the ongoing debate over goal-line technology and in the age of the bristling, bear-baiting post-match interview, it has become too easy for modern managers to lose sight of the fact that it is the teams, not the referee, who are best placed to decide the outcome of a game of football.
