On The Scotsman iPad app: Emma Cowing examines the reaction to terms of endearment

IN THIS column exclusively for The Scotsman iPad, Emma Cowing discusses the problems that some people have with certain words used to convey friendliness.

Coming from Glasgow, terms like ‘hen’ are commonplace. But why do some people get so hung up about certain terminology?

Emma Cowing writes: “The revelation had sparked a hashtag which, it seemed, quite a few women agreed with. “I find it demeaning,” wrote one. “It’s offensive slang,” wrote another. “Pet names are never appropriate in a professional setting,” remarked a third, a sentiment I have to say I partly agree with, if only because “Snookums” has never seemed a particularly appropriate way to address someone at a press conference.

Living in Glasgow, as I do, one runs a daily barrage of “hens”, “sweethearts”, “loves” and “darlings” from the moment one steps out the front door. It is part of the fabric of the city, of its aggressive friendliness and fearsome affection.”
