The monarch said: “In Scotland after the referendum, many felt great disappointment, while others felt great relief; and bridging these differences will take time.”

Our cartoonist Iain Green has imagined a Christmas Day with former SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond, his successor Nicola Sturgeon and the leaders of Scottish Labour, the Scottish Tories and the Scottish Lib Dems - Jim Murphy, Ruth Davidson and Willie Rennie.

Earlier this month, Mr Murphy hinted at working more closely with the Nationalists in the coming months.
