The music icon, who picked up the gong for British Male Artist of the Year, was not attending the ceremony with supermodel and friend Kate Moss picking up the award on the Thin White Duke’s behalf.

The speech ended with a plea for Scotland to remain in the Union - “Scotland, stay with us” - sparking a flurry of activity on Bowie’s Facebook page, mainly from pro-independence supporters.

A handful of posters claimed they would be getting rid of Bowie’s music as a result of his comments.
