This week shipyard cuts provoked a political storm amid claims bases on the Clyde had been spared because of next year’s Scottish independence referendum.
It was also claimed the move allowed UK ministers to exert political pressure by holding out the prospect of a massive boost to the Clyde to build 13 new frigates but only if Scotland votes against independence in next year’s referendum.
