Now is the right time for new non-surgical body sculpting technique - Dr Nestor Demosthenous

As the world paused this year, Covid has been a time for reflection and it will come as no surprise that there’s been a boom in people taking responsibility for their health and wellbeing - as well as taking ownership around things which can help them look and feel better.

There has been a marked Covid-driven growth trend in our sector in particular, and this can largely be attributed to these desires to look better and to seek optimum health in what is a challenging time in people’s lives. Like others in Aesthetic Medicine, we’ve had to pivot our clinical services in direct response to the Covid-19 crisis and address this demand head-on for patients.

Our Lifestyle Medicine department, which looks at mental, physical and emotional health, has been evolved. I’ve also introduced new treatments which take a more holistic approach and offer both aesthetic and health results.

An example of one such treatment is the launch of a new revolutionary muscle and sculpting technology called truBody, which I have just introduced into the clinic. We are the first clinic in Scotland to have this innovation that importantly offers both medical and aesthetic results.

Non-surgical body sculpting is one of the fastest growing treatments in the world and studies show that nearly 80% of us are unhappy with our bodies. This year alone, despite Covid, the non-invasive body shaping market is expected to grow by more than 16%, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Medicine.

What makes this particular body sculpting technology unique is that it can also have remarkable medical benefits, such as building muscle after atrophy resulting from disuse (for example after injury or surgery). Studies have also shown it helps reduce some forms of chronic back pain and increases range of motion, making it ideal to integrate into lower back pain and sports injury rehabilitation regimes. It couldn’t have come to Scotland at a better time.

In the current climate where your strength and immunity have never been more important, this treatment is geared towards a number of different people. There are those who can’t exercise as well as before due to injury or trauma, or those who have had muscle wastage caused by periods of disuse due to illness or treatment, including chemotherapy. A staggering 60% of pregnancies can result in abdominal muscle separation – this treatment greatly helps to improve muscle tone and strength, effectively tightening the abdominal wall by working directly on the transverse abdominis - the deeper muscles that we really want to work on to see real change.

And then there are those people who want to maximise their health and physique but can’t attend the gym as much as before. This treatment is designed to enhance rather than disrupt the workout industry because, as well as the medical benefits, truBody is also a non-surgical sculpting treatment for buttocks, abdomen, arms, thighs and calves – with one 45 minute session equating to 54,000 sit ups. Its therefore ideal for those looking to eliminate stubborn, unwanted fat and tone muscles - as well as those who are serious about reaching peak fitness levels.

As a team of clinicians, we’ve been tracking the huge developments in the body sculpting industry for years. We were clear that if and when the time was right for us to bring one of these technologies to Scotland, we wanted it not only to be revolutionary from an aesthetics perspective, but it would have to have remarkable medical benefits as well. Not only have we found the right technology, but with a global pandemic forcing us to reassess our relationship with our own health, the time - as they say - is nigh.
