The stronger you stand, the clearer your connections show. Like a tenacious tree with roots that are deeply imbedded, you stay grounded while allowing steady growth. In business this is essential, in the fashion business it is imperative. And the poster child for this ethos is menswear label Duchamp. Last week I chatted clothes over a cuppa with their very clever CEO, who brought this fact home to me.

Marc Psarolis has nurtured more than 20 years of experience and contacts on his journey through fashion, harvesting relationships at Duchamp that he cultivated during his days with Harvey Nichols and Mulberry in the early 1990s.

Be that at the factory the label uses in Birmingham to the fashion buyers out in Dubai, it is this vast network that feeds back into every facet of his business, keeping its heart beating.

Of course building contacts takes time, but it’s also about utilising what is around you and playing to your strengths with a team that enables a line to flourish. It’s this little gold nugget of knowledge that leaves me feeling empowered as the quest to discover what designers have to do in order to launch a collection gets closer to show-time this August. A label is not something you can do flying solo, there needs to be roots to help you soar.
