Karen Koren: Singin’ in the Rain, not snow

I’M just back from London and was not hampered by the weather at all. I think there is so much fuss made about the snow, it’s ridiculous. It looks very beautiful and for once Scotland has not had the worst of it.

Katy, my daughter, took me out for a lovely but inexpensive meal, followed by the theatre. We went to see Singin’ In The Rain, one of her all-time favourite musicals since she was a little girl. She used to know the words off by heart and could more or less dance the routines.

My granddaughter, Lily, is also a film musical buff. Her favourite is Annie Get Your Gun and the song she loves most is There’s No Business Like Showbusiness, which she sings to us loudly, proudly and often – very cute!

While at supper I texted Nica Burns, to see if she was around. She is the organiser of the Edinburgh Comedy Awards and also the new owner of the Palace Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue where Singin’ In The Rain is showing.

She texted back to say sadly she was not around, but when we arrived at the box office to pick up our tickets, to my surprise and delight, we had been upgraded to the front stalls - well, not so far forward that we could be splashed by the rain, but far enough to have brilliant seats. As I am sure you can imagine, the tickets were not cheap in the first place. It was such a nice thing of Nica to do and it makes me feel that sometimes it is worth doing what I do to get some perks.

Katy was a bit over-whelmed saying, “You could have told me you knew the owner!”
