John Gibson: Quiet, it’s time for my power nap

I’m being urged to keep a pillow permanently handy in case I feel sleepy. I should have a nap UNDER my desk, advises Jayne Morris, health sector lie coach for NHS Online.

Twenty-minute power naps any time of day should work, she says. Doubtless my editor would have something to say if he caught me bunking under the desk. As it ’appens, I do keep a pillow inches away from the desk. But the thought of power napping here at hustling Holyrood somehow has never appealed.

A class act

Once he’d blown out the candles, Michael Caine, celebrating his deceptive 80th with the fragrant Shakira, claimed: “People always told me ‘You can’t be an actor, you don’t talk posh’ and I said ‘I’ll show you how to be an actor without talking posh’ and I did it.”

And Sir Michael, above, adds: “I think life has got to develop as you get older. I don’t want to be wandering along doing the same old thing. I want more out of life.”

Final whistle

Football, specifically Celtic, was Derek Rutherford’s passion. He became an agent, with players both sides of the Border on his books. He also dabbled in player management. Prominent among those who sought his guidance was the illustrious John “Robbo” Robertson.

Derek, who passed away this month after a lengthy illness, relied on Castle Security for his livelihood.

Says the company’s Keith Cook: “Derek created Castle and he was in the security business for over 30 years. He was a pupil at Holy Rood High, so it’s no surprise that he had a sneaking for Celtic. He was a player himself for junior club Arniston Rangers.”
