From the archives: Scots butchers complaint, 23 April, 1948

SCOTTISH meat traders are still pressing vigorously for an issue to retail butchers of an additional allocation of manufacturing meat.

They contend that the present allocation of meat, used principally in the manufacture of sausages and pies, does not operate equitably so far as Scotland is concerned under the scheme of the Ministry of Food. In a statement to a representative of The Scotsman in Glasgow yesterday, Mr James Welsh, secretary and treasurer of the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders’ Associations, said: “It would appear that the Minister of Food would rather let the people of Scotland go short than alter his scheme of allocation, which, in fact, is supported neither by pre-war usage nor post-war equity. Surely the paramount consideration is not the convenience of the Ministry, but rather the need to give to each member of the community a fair share of the very meagre supplies available at the present time.”
