From the archives: New trains in Scotland

25 April, 1935

THERE is a conspiracy afoot at present between King Sol and the London and North Eastern Railway Company to persuade us to abandon city streets for the attractions of seaside and country. The railway company has done its share more than adequately by the provision of a type of train, entirely new in Scotland, to be placed at the disposal of tourist and excursion parties. This train, which was exhibited to the public at the Waverley Station yesterday, is capable of accommodating 592 passengers. Its resplendent green and yellow exterior declared at once that here was no ordinary train, and a glance at the interior confirmed this impression. In fact, the visitor’s first idea on entering one of the saloon carriages was that he had stumbled into an hotel lounge by mistake, so luxurious are the fittings and scheme of decoration generally. There are compact chromium-plated cigarette boxes to hand.
