From the archive: Work for the Scottish farm servant 13 June, 1931

THAT at the present time there was little if any, unemployment in the agricultural industry in Scotland was the opinion expressed by an official of the National Farmers’ Union of Scotland when he gave evidence before the Royal Commission on Unemployment Insurance in London yesterday.

While, in some cases, the representative said, farm staffs had been reduced for economic reasons, there had not been the general reduction which many people feared. That was due to the hope that things would improve and to the promise of the Chancellor of the Exchequer on August 1 last that the Government would take whatever steps could be devised to place cereal production on an economic basis.

The objection of the NFU to agricultural workers being included in the unemployment insurance scheme was also voiced.
