On these developments will depend to a large extent not merely the future industrial status of Scotland, but also her ability to provide a rising standard of living for her people. Yesterday the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade drew attention to the opening up of new enterprises and to the prospect that certain firms which had opened branches in Scotland might continue after the war. But too much dependence should not be placed on that. He also commented upon the gains which the specified areas in Scotland, now including Glasgow, would derive from the Distribution of Industry Act. In this connection he made the significant observation that nothing could be more suicidal than for traders in great cities to sit back and wait to see what was coming to them.
