“Our awful Corporation leaves the gardens as heaps of rubble with far too many stones and far too little soil, but I think loveliness has been created within the home and outside it by the overwhelming majority of the people.”

This tribute was paid by Lord Provost Sir Andrew Murray when he opened the 80th show of the Edinburgh Home and Garden Society in the Oddfellows Hall. Councillor W Fife presided and the prizes were presented by Miss Anna Scarlett.

The leading trophy winners were Mr Donald Robson, who won the show championship and many other prizes; Mr JE Black, Granton Road, who is 86 years of age, and won the cup for pot plants; and Mr F Batlam, who was awarded the cup for cut flowers.

Mrs Greenlaw won the championship in the home section.
