Analysis: Kate Middleton looked stunning as ever – but Queen stole the show

For me, Kate Middleton nails it every time. Always at the height of fashion, she wore the bright red Alexander McQueen pleated skirt and peplum top with grace and elegance, finished with a Sylvia Fletcher hat, writes Tessa Hartmann.

The constant media portrayal of Kate being “thrifty” simply because she wears something twice is just ridiculous. If it works, don’t change it, is the motto for a future Queen in a time of economic crisis.

Eugenie was wearing what looked like a Roland Mouret dress – the royal’s favourite – LK Bennett shoes and an Anya Hindmarch bag, with a black Stephen Jones hat with a coral flower. Pretty and pleasant, but not front-row material.

The Duchess of Cornwall wore a look from her favourite frock designer, Anna Valentine, in a predictable coat-dress, complemented with a hat by Philip Treacy.

The look of the day had to go to the Queen. The ever-faithful Angela Kelly’s ivory boucle dress, embroidered with gold, silver and ivory spots and embellished with Swarovski crystals, was just perfect.
