THE Conservative goal was to come third in the Council elections — hardly an ambitious target given the anticipated Liberal Democrat collapse — but Ruth Davidson’s Council candidates look well on the way to achieve that.

As I write the Tories are recording a net loss of seven while the Liberal Democrats are recording a net loss of forty — a plague on both of their houses, but the Tories appear more immune.

With some notable Green gains (and the soon to be viral international news of a Penguin putch in Pentlands) we may at last be seeing the beginning of a much needed realignment of Scottish politics.

Meanwhile Labour can be quietly happy as they wait on the Glasgow result with the SNP nervous that the expected gains have not been as good as hoped for.
