One in six in Lothians is abuse victim

As many as one in six Lothians residents have suffered abuse at the hands of a partner, the Scottish Government has said.

Crime statistics from a survey suggested 16 per cent of adults had been attacked on some level, since they turned 16, by a present or former lover.

The report shows the extent of unreported domestic abuse in the country, against both men and women.

Earlier this year the Evening News reported how abuse against males was probably far higher than thought, such is the embarrassment attached to the issue.

Housing and communities minister Alex Neil said: "Scotland is leading the way in getting the message out that we will not, as a society, tolerate abusive behaviour in any form.

"It is encouraging that there is now less abuse by partners and police forces are cracking down on domestic incidents.

"We are also pleased that more male victims are finding the courage to come forward and our confidential Men's Advice Line stands ready to support men experiencing abuse."

"Preventing abuse and offering practical and emotional support is a key priority."
