One o’clock gunner James Shannon fired over ‘tours’

EDINBURGH Castle’s One o’clock gunner has been sacked amid claims that he offered unofficial tours at the landmark.

Sergeant James Shannon, who became the 29th person to carry out the role in 2005, was suspended in February and fired last month.

It has been alleged that he led nighttime tours to parts of the Castle that are usually off-limits.

A source said: “The claim is Edinburgh Castle had two tours – the official tour and the Shannon tour.”

But Shannon, a member of 105 Regiment Royal Artillery with 24 years’ service, disputed claims that he was untrustworthy and has vowed to appeal against his dismissal.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed Shannon was no longer the gunner but said it would be inappropriate to comment further
during an appeal process.
