Officers injured as police car hit at crash scene

TWO police officers were injured today after their car was hit by a vehicle at the scene of another crash.

They had been called out to an accident on the eastbound carriageway of the A71 on the outskirts of Edinburgh at 6:30am .

A car had skidded off the road and crashed into a wall about one mile west of the Dalmahoy Hotel.

They were dealing with the incident when a third vehicleis understood to have ran into the police car.

The officers were taken to St John’s Hospital for treatment and another casualty was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

There no details as yet of other casualties.

Fire crews were called to the scene and used cutting equipment to make the vehicle safe.

A police spokesperson said: “Lothian and Borders Police responded to a road collision on the Eastbound carriageway of the A71 at around 6.30am after a car left the road and struck the wall.

“While in attendance, a police vehicle was struck by another car, causing injury to the two officers.

“They have been taken to the St John’s Hospital for treatment and the road was closed for around two hours while police investigated these collisions.”
