David Davis warns of no Brexit deal and then trips off stage

David Davis gave a talk at a conference in London where he warned that Britain face leaving the EU without a deal before tripping off the stage as he exited.

The Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union expressed his confidence that a deal would be completed, yet admitted that there was a possibility of the opposite.

“Reaching a deal with the European Union is not only far and away the most likely outcome, it’s also the best outcome for our country,” the Brexit Minister told the Deal Or No Deal conference in London.

“I don’t think it would be in the interest for either side for there to be no deal. But as a responsible government it is right that we make every plan for every eventuality.”

He added: “Over the past year every department across Whitehall has been working at pace covering the whole range of scenarios.

“These plans have been well developed, have been designed to provide the flexibility to respond to a negotiated agreement, as well as preparing us for the chance that we leave without a deal.”

The struggles to make forward steps in negotiations has been a frustration for Theresa May and the government. One of the biggest stumbling blocks has been the future trade relationship between Britain and the EU with the latter reluctant to make progress until debts are settled.

As Davis finished his speech and exited the stage he stumbled, which was caught on camera, and seen by many as symbolic of the Brexit process.

One Twitter user noted: “I genuinely feel sorry for people having to write things like Veep and The Thick Of It, at this point.”
