No prisoners from court in West Lothian at Addiewell

A NEW prison in West Lothian has still to accept prisoners from courts in the area, it has emerged.

The privately run Addiewell jail takes around 90 per cent of its inmates from courts in Lanarkshire, despite lying in the heart of West Lothian.

The details emerged from NHS Lothian, which has been charged with taking on the healthcare of inmates since November last year.

A forum dealing with the issue was given an update on how medics were dealing with the situation when the information came out.

Despite the statistics, the meeting heard: “Addiewell’s population is currently 80-90 per cent from Lanarkshire courts, but it is hoped that Addiewell will soon be taking prisoners from West Lothian courts.”

The jail is run by Sodexo Justice Services on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service.
