Newbattle school plan is approved

A MULTI-million pound project to build a new Newbattle Community High School has taken a major step forward after its location was
confirmed.

Midlothian councillors gave the thumbs-up to the Mayfield Complex, which is across the road from the current school. The complex is already owned by the council, which means the new school and community facilities could be completed two years earlier than other options. Work is set to start within 12 to 18 months, with the Scottish Government contributing two-thirds of the £25 million cost.

Councillor Lisa Beattie, Midlothian’s education leader, said: “This project is an excellent opportunity for us to be ambitious for the communities we serve, both in terms of improving the educational experience for our young people and in terms of regenerating this part of Midlothian.”
