Last week, Margaret and John McDowall created a tiny post office in Southend, on the Mull of Kintyre, Argyll, which claimed to be the smallest in Scotland.

But now, a sub-postmistress in Sutherland says her office is 4ft smaller than the island shed.

Esther Brauer, 82, of Kylesku Post Office in Sutherland, operates from a wooden shed measuring just 8ft by 6ft.

Ms Bauer said: “To have a 8ft x 10ft shed would be like a des res to me. I could use the extra space.”

Mr McDowall paid £518 for the flatpack and it is fitted with with full electrics, phone line and alarm link to the police.
