Mystery of sports heroes

LIBRARIANS are trying to identify a group of Edwardian Scots cyclists and sprinters – who researchers believe may have been “the Sir Chris Hoy or Allan Wells of their day”.

The National Library of Scotland has uncovered a collection of 35 black and white sporting photographs, from the early part of the last century, showing forgotten sporting Scottish heroes.

But they admit “very little detail” is known about the athletes in the pictures.

Senior curator Graham Hogg said: “We have had these photographs in our collections for some time. These images reflect the Olympic spirit and we thought it would be good at this time to try to find out more about them.”
