Mystery of canal love letters solved

Love letters from the 1930s found in a box floating on a canal have been identified and returned to their owner after a “tremendous public response”, police said.

The box, which also contained wedding invitations, was found floating in water at Dochgarroch, by Inverness, in December and was handed in to a local police station.

The letters were addressed to Miss S R Paterson, “Bidston”, Ross Avenue, Inverness and postmarked Edinburgh, 19 August 1934.

Northern Constabulary appealed for information and the owner of the letters claimed them yesterday.

A force spokeswoman said: “With the assistance of so many people we can confirm that the letters were written by Robert Wright to his bride-to-be Sarah Rose Paterson.

“A lady from the Dochgarroch area has come forward today to let us know that she was given the letter writing box and contents by Robert Wright.”
