Murder bid trial told of DNA match

THE man alleged to have attacked a senior law official was found after DNA swabs were taken from the victim, a court has heard.

The samples were collected shortly before Leslie Cumming underwent surgery in hospital, and led police to the accused Robert Graham.

Mr Cumming, the former deputy chief executive of the Law Society of Scotland, was attacked near his Murrayfield home in January 2006 as he returned home from work.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard yesterday from a forensic scientist who said the DNA match with 46-year-old Graham was “as good as it gets”.

The jury heard how the match from samples taken from underneath the victim’s fingernails were so strong, the chances of them not been from Graham – who denies the murder attempt – were one in a billion.
