MSP hails food bank church

AN MSP has put forward a parliamentary motion in honour of a church in his constituency which set up a food bank.

The Holy Trinity Church in Wester Hailes has handed out more than 600 food parcels, weighing in excess of two tonnes in total, already this year.

Gordon Macdonald, who represents Edinburgh Pentlands, congratulated the efforts of the volunteers with the motion at the Scottish Parliament. He highlighted the work of the church and said that as a result of changes in the benefits system driven by the Westminster government, more vulnerable people will become dependent on volunteers for basic necessities.

He added: “As the UK Government’s welfare changes take effect more people will be forced to seek assistance from similar charities.”
