MP’s metal theft call

LIVINGSTON Labour MP Graeme Morrice has called on the UK Government to take urgent action to tackle metal theft.

He backed proposals for licensing scrap metal dealers, a possible ban on cash transactions and tougher police powers to close down rogue traders.

Mr Morrice said: “Metal theft is becoming an epidemic, and urgent action is needed to stop this getting out of control.

“Households face repeated power cuts, commuters face increasing delays, churches, public buildings and even war memorials are being damaged.

“We need a much tougher licensing regime for dealers, including requiring people selling to scrap metal dealers to prove their identity, and stronger powers for the police to investigate.”
