MPs agree to elect deputy speakers

MPS yesterday backed in principle the election of deputy speakers as part of reforms aimed at modernising the Commons.

The move comes after a call from Speaker John Bercow, who has said he wanted to see a new system of electing his deputies.

He said his election proved MPs were "ready for change".
