MP warns of identity theft risks

A LOCAL MP has urged people not to fall victim to identify fraud this Christmas.

Graeme Morrice is backing a campaign by CIFAS – the UK’s fraud prevention service – to promote awareness of ID theft and fraud this Christmas.

In 2010 CIFAS identified and protected more than 89,000 victims of identity theft and, with an 11 per cent increase in identity fraud in the first six months of this year, there are concerns more people will fall victim this Christmas.

Mr Morrice said: “Identity theft occurs throughout the year. However, increased retail activity around Christmas means that people are at greater risk of falling victim to ID theft at this time of year. It is really important that people take every step they can to protect against this type of crime.”

Richard Hurley, communications manager at CIFAS, said: “The safety tips used throughout the year to protect our identities are even more crucial during the festive period.”
