MP calls for more action on HIV/AIDS

CONTINUED action on HIV and AIDS is vital if progress is to be made in the fights against the virus, Edinburgh East Labour MP Sheila Gilmore said today.

Marking World AIDS Day, she said it was vital keep up pressure on the UK coalition to continue the work of the previous government provided in the global fight to tackle HIV and AIDS.

Ms Gilmore recently met Shadow International Development Secretary Harriet Harman to discuss the issue.

She said: "With 33 million people still living with HIV worldwide, action now is vital if we are to make a real difference.

"I am disappointed that to date the government has failed to make clear its contribution to the Global Fund which is so important in fighting HIV and AIDS.

"No one country can hope to tackle the spread of HIV and AIDS alone - that is why international leadership is more important than ever."
