MP backs call to halt green belt building

Edinburgh East Labour MP Sheila Gilmore has backed local community groups opposing council plans to build on the green belt.

A judge last week quashed the Edinburgh Local Plan proposal to build 400 homes on greenbelt land near Newcraighall. But campaigners fear the city council still wants to press ahead with the plans.

Ms Gilmore is staging a public meeting to allow the community to refocus its opposition following the ruling.

She said: 'I am asking the local community to meet and refocus our opposition to the plans if the council decides to press ahead. Building on this greenbelt is not acceptable when we have swathes of brownbelt going to waste."

The meeting is at Newcraighall Primary School, Whitehill Street, on Monday 16 May from 7pm.
