Mountain memorial to wartime airmen

A GRANITE memorial is to be placed on the most remote and highest war grave in the UK.

Six airmen were killed when their bomber crashed on Ben More, north of Ullapool in Wester Ross, while on a training flight in heavy snowstorms in April 1941.

Because of the severe weather and the remoteness of the wreck, 2,300ft up the mountain, it was a month befor their bodies were found.

They were buried on the hillside and the grave has been marked by a cairn.

Now a 600kg granite memorial is to be placed over the crew’s resting place.
